How to Stay Safe While Dating Online in Kenya
Online dating works, and it works well — but the habits that keep it safe are worth taking seriously from your very first conversation, not just before a first date. Here's what actually matters.
Keep the conversation on the platform, at first
It's tempting to move to WhatsApp or a phone call quickly — Kenyans are quick to exchange numbers, and there's nothing wrong with that once you've built some trust. But in the first few conversations, keeping things on the platform gives you a paper trail and keeps your personal number private until you've decided this person is worth that access.
If someone pushes hard to get your number, home address, or workplace in the first message or two, that's worth noticing — not necessarily a dealbreaker, but a reason to slow down.
Video call before you meet in person
A five-minute video call does more to confirm someone is who they say they are than any amount of texting. It's a normal, expected step now, not an awkward one — if someone refuses every request for a video call with a new excuse each time, take that seriously.
Choose the first meeting place yourself
Pick somewhere public and familiar to you — a café in Westlands, a restaurant in Kilimani, wherever you'd feel comfortable getting up and leaving. Arrange your own transport there and back rather than relying on your date to pick you up, at least for the first meeting.
Tell a friend or family member exactly who you're meeting, where, and roughly when you expect to be done. It takes thirty seconds and it's the single most effective safety habit there is.
Money requests are always a red flag
This one is worth being blunt about: nobody you've met on a dating platform and haven't met in person has a legitimate reason to ask you for money, airtime, or M-Pesa transfers — no matter how good the story is (a stuck relative, a medical emergency, a business opportunity). This is one of the most common scam patterns in Kenya specifically, and it targets people who are otherwise being perfectly reasonable and trusting. If it happens, stop responding and report the profile immediately.
Use the tools built into the platform
Blocking ends contact immediately, in both directions, and reporting sends the profile straight to a real moderation team — neither requires the other person's cooperation or even their awareness. You don't need a dramatic reason to use either one. If something feels off, trust that and act on it.
