How to Talk to Your Match Without Running Out of Things to Say

You matched, you said hi, they said hi back — and now what? The gap between a first message and an actual conversation is where most matches quietly fizzle out. Here's how to close it.

Skip the opening line that needs no reply

"Hi" and "Hey, how are you" are technically messages, but they don't give the other person anything to respond to beyond an equally generic reply. Reference something specific from their profile instead — a place they mentioned, an opinion in their bio, a photo that raises an obvious question. Specific questions get specific, interesting answers.

Ask questions that can't be answered in one word

"Do you like traveling?" gets you "yeah" and a dead end. "What's the last trip you took that you'd genuinely do again?" gets you a story. The difference between a conversation that dies and one that flows is usually just the shape of the questions being asked.

Match their energy and pace

If they're sending short, quick replies, don't respond with three paragraphs — and vice versa. Mismatched conversation styles feel effortful on both sides even when neither person has done anything wrong. Pay attention to how they're texting, not just what they're saying.

It's okay to suggest moving to a call or meeting

If a text conversation has been going well for a few days, suggesting a video call or a meetup isn't presumptuous — it's often exactly what a good conversation is building toward. See our safety guidelines for how to do that sensibly.
