The Etiquette of Unmatching and Blocking

Blocking and reporting sometimes get framed as a last resort for extreme situations, but they're everyday tools meant to be used whenever they'd genuinely help — here's how to think about that without overthinking it.

You don't need a serious reason to block someone

A conversation that's just not clicking, someone who makes you a little uncomfortable without doing anything explicitly wrong, or simply not wanting to talk to a specific person anymore — all valid, all sufficient. Blocking is a tool for managing your own experience, not a formal sanction that requires justification.

Blocking is immediate and mutual

Once you block someone, contact ends in both directions right away — they can't message you, and you won't see them in Discover again. Neither person needs to explain anything to the other; it just happens.

Reporting is a different tool, for a different purpose

Blocking protects your own experience. Reporting flags a profile for our moderation team to look at, which helps protect everyone else too. They're not mutually exclusive — you can (and often should) do both for the same profile if something felt genuinely wrong.

There's no need to feel guilty about either one

Using these tools isn't rude, dramatic, or an overreaction — it's exactly what they're there for. A platform where people hesitate to block or report because it feels awkward is a less safe platform for everyone on it.
